I was carefully optimistic with Donald Trump’s election as the 45th President of the United States of America. But even I have boundaries. Has Trump become too unhinged?
Hiring the Best People?
During his presidential campaign, Trump vowed to “only hire the best people” to serve in his administration. And although he made some great appointments (e.g. General James “Mad Dog” Mattis as Secretary of Defense and Sarah Huckabee Sanders as Press Secretary), Trump clearly has difficulties with finding competent and reliable personnel. Remember Sean Spicer, Reince Priebus, Anthony Scaramucci, and Rex Tillerson? Not exactly the best of the best. Luckily some were smart enough to resign themselves.
But the worst of them all? Omarosa Manigault Newman. How could Trump ever consider that vile opportunist as a trustworthy aide? Looking at her past history, everyone knew she was going to be trouble. She’s the prime example that President Trump does not always hire the best. Far from it.
When you give a crazed, crying lowlife a break, and give her a job at the White House, I guess it just didn’t work out. Good work by General Kelly for quickly firing that dog!

However, by calling Omarosa a dog, Trump gave the rabid left and the mainstream media all they needed to draw attention away from the main problem (i.e. her incompetence, drama and toxic attitude) and focus on his language instead. That was unwise. A well-thought, carefully composed message could have been much more effective. Instead, President Trump is making it way too easy for his opposition to spin and control the narrative.
Yes, President Trump has his flaws. There’s nothing wrong with that – nobody is perfect. But a great leader realizes his shortcomings. And Trump is unable to do that. Humility and self-reflection are unknown to him – he’s a full-fledged narcissist.
I believe he would be much more respected if he could just admit fault once in a while. Such an admission could earn him more support. It would make him more relatable and subsequently counter the image of a typical career politician. And that is exactly why so many Americans voted for him in the first place.
Luckily Trump also made some great achievements.
Even his strongest critics cannot deny President Trump’s impact on the conflict on the Korean Peninsula. Contrary to Obama, Trump took a strong stance against North Korea’s increasing threats and managed to bring Kim Jong-un back to the negotiation table. In fact, the relations between North and South Korea are currently at its best since decades. Both states even announced their bid to jointly host the 2032 Summer Olympic Games. President Obama never even came close to such a success with his foreign policy.
Obama also provided no solution to the crisis in the Middle East. However, President Trump took a much firmer position and ordered more offensive actions against ISIS in Syria and Iraq, resulting in crushing blows to the Islamic terrorist group.
The American economy is also in overdrive. Unemployment is at a record low, especially among African-Americans. The Dow Jones is breaking records, and consumer confidence has increased as well. Trump’s protectionist and nationalist policy is clearly working. European nations should take notes.
His strong stance on immigration and national security is also shared by many. Just like his opposition to globalism.
We will never surrender America’s sovereignty to an unelected, unaccountable, global bureaucracy. America is governed by Americans. We reject the ideology of globalism, and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism. — President Donald J. Trump
Damn straight, Mr. President! Many here in Europe feel the same about the European Union.
Personality vs Policy
I support the conservative MAGA movement in the USA. It is the embodiment of the same disdain for the globalists and political elites I observe here in Europe from an increasing number of citizens – the silent majority that has been ignored for far too long.
And I want to support President Trump too. But his brash personality is making it more difficult for me to do so.
Is he a narcissist? Yes. Is he always right? No. Some days he baffles me with a dumb or unnecessary statement, only to positively surprise me the day after. He is sadly not the greatest orator, and still has to learn that silence can be golden. After all, the left is perfectly capable of destroying themselves without President Trump interfering.
Perhaps I should focus more on the difference between Trump’s personality and his policy. Because I do believe that President Trump truly loves America. I believe he means well and is committed to make America great again.
Take care and until next time.
