The Importance of Sleep
Multiple studies in the last decades have emphasized on the importance of sleep. Just like proper nutrition and hydration, it is essential to your health. A solid 7-9 hours of good sleep per night is the recommended minimum for adults. Any less and you risk severe physical and mental repercussions in the long term. In fact, the American National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke states the following:
Research shows that a chronic lack of sleep, or getting poor quality sleep, increases the risk of disorders including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and obesity.— National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
As we spend a third of our lifetime asleep, it is in our best interest to ensure we get the best quality of sleep possible. I’m a minimalist consumer and certainly don’t waste my money on useless junk. But I never skimp on my bed, mattress and head pillow. And neither should you, so buy the best you can afford.
Nonetheless, I still woke up tired and with little energy. And it got worse as I aged – with sore muscles and back pain added to the mix. I wasn’t the only one, as my girlfriend suffered from the same issues.
It all changed once we got our body pillows.
Benefits of the Body Pillow
See, I am a side sleeper. And despite having a quality ergonomic mattress and head pillow, I still lacked the proper support for my body at night.
I must admit that I was highly reluctant and skeptical when my girlfriend brought home her body pillow. But at the same time my interest was piqued, so I did what any good boyfriend would do – I
confiscated borrowed her pillow for a night of selfish indulgence testing to ensure my girlfriend’s safety.
I am typically a morning person who gets up early and requires little sleep. But that night, I slept for 10 hours straight. It was the best nocturnal rest I had in ages! I woke up relaxed and refreshed – it was truly amazing. My back pain and sore muscles? Gone.
Of course I immediately ordered my own body pillow. And after further research and many nights of my own personal experience, I discovered that sleeping with a body pillow provides the following advantages:
- Greatly improved comfort while sleeping with relaxed muscles and decreased levels of stress.
- Proper support to the body by relieving pressure from the lower back, spine, hips, and knees.
- Better cooling and temperature regulation. Placing the pillow between your legs allows for better air flow to your balls, gents! Far more comfortable in the summer.
- Improved blood circulation, weight distribution, and spinal alignment.
It truly was a revelation. After a couple of nights, I could no longer imagine living without my body pillow. It provides so much great value to my life – especially because sleep is so incredibly essential to our well-being.
Tips & Pointers
First of all, when I talk about “body pillows,” I do not mean those pillows with half-naked Japanese cartoon characters on them (i.e. dakimakura). Those are for creepy and cringy soy boys – not adult men.
Instead, I mean the typical therapeutic and ergonomic “maternity” or “pregnancy” body pillows often used by pregnant women and new mothers. No, it’s not silly to use these as a man – they are fucking awesome.
Secondly, I do not recommend to buy pillows that are too large. They occupy huge amounts of space in your bed and limit your freedom of movement. So better avoid the U-shaped body pillows and stick to the smaller curved or straight variants instead.
Thirdly, get at least 2 fitted and washable pillowcases. These will protect your body pillow against stains and extend its life. I also prefer the more eco-friendly natural organic pillows and filling over synthetic variants.
